Tinta de Toro
"Tinta de Toro,a grape as unique heritage"
Tinta de Toro
The Toro region’s grape is the Tinta de Toro, a dark, tough-skinned variety from the Tempranillo family and one of the very few to resist the phylloxera blight that ravaged European vineyards in the late 19th century. Sometimes called the “blackest of black grapes”, the Tinta de Toro is only found in this part of Spain. Its small berries are rich in tannin and, when picked at optimal ripeness, have exceptionally concentrated fruit flavors. Numanthia’s winemaker let the grape speak for itself, expressing its full-bodied intensity and complexity within the natural structure provided by the tannins.
Wine has been produced in Toro for over 2,000 years. The harsh climate and dry, stony soil make life difficult for the vines but also stopped phylloxera gaining a foothold here in the 1870s. Most of Toro’s vines were planted more than 50 years ago, though some are even older. Spaced three meters apart in rows, each vine has room to find enough moisture in the clay subsoil some five meters down, making irrigation unnecessary. In these conditions, yields are naturally limited to between 2,000 and 3,000 kilograms of fruit per hectare, among the lowest in the world. If Toro seems an austere, even extreme place in which to make wine, the grape that grows here has a power and elegance that are equally singular.
